The History Behind the Original Paloma Cocktail

Little is known about the historical origin of the Paloma cocktail, the most popular tequila-based drink in Mexico. Some believe that it is named after La Paloma (“The Dove”), the popular folk song composed in the early 1860s. Difford’s Guide claims it was created by the legendary Don Javier Delgado Corona, owner and bartender of La Capilla, in Tequila, Mexico.

Sweet, sour, salty and bitter, it hits four parts of your palate at once, and with this version’s signature honey-lime salt rim, you’re sure to fall in love.

What Makes this Paloma Mocktail “Functional?”

Grapefruit is low in calories and provides a significant amount of fiber and antioxidants. It also benefits your immune system by providing several vitamins and minerals known for their role in protecting the body against infection.

Grapefruit can promote fullness and reduce calorie intake and insulin resistance, which can lower your risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Certain nutrients and antioxidants in grapefruit have been shown to help protect the heart by regulating blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Many of these antioxidants also help prevent the development of cancer.

Grapefruit contains vitamin C, often used in serums to heal the skin, brighten dark spots and smooth the skin surface. Studies show that an increased intake of vitamin C through foods like grapefruit may help combat these skin woes as well. Grapefruit also has a high water content and helps your body produce collagen, which benefits skin hydration and wrinkles

The citric, malic and tartaric acids in grapefruit are the very same alpha-hydroxy acids used in skin care products for their ability to improve skin texture and elasticity. In tandem with the benefits of white tea, lime and honey, this pink grapefruit mocktail is bursting with the nutrients your skin needs to look its healthy best. The optional scoop of collagen peptide powder adds even more skin-boosting nourishment.

White Tea “Paloma” Mocktail’s Magickal Correspondence

Grapefruit boasts the magickal properties of purification and protection. Potent and aromatic, you can use the juice in a purification bath to cleanse away negativity or burn dried grapefruit peels to protect your space from low vibrational influences.

Use the essential oil in candle magick to aid in manifesting your intentions or while meditating to help focus your thoughts. Grapefruit is very cleansing to the aura and mental body, which helps clear away mental chatter. Once we minimize the confusion, we can more easily reclaim our power and spiritual purpose.

Ingredients

Drink Base

  • 3/4 cup water
  • 2 bags white tea (cleansing, new beginnings)
  • 3 1-inch cubes green bell pepper  (love, self-awareness), muddled
  • 5 black peppercorns (banish negativity), muddled
  • 1 strip lime rind (healing, love, protfction), bitter white removed
  • pinch crushed red pepper (fidelity, love, fiery spice)

Mixers

Garnish

  • palmful fine-grained sea salt  (prosperity, cleansing, protection)
  • 1-2 grapefruit (zest)

Instructions

  • Boil the water and add the tea bags and aromatics, if using. Steep for five minutes. Remove aromatics and squeeze out tea bags. Stir in collagen powder and honey until dissolved and place in fridge until chilled – at least 30 minutes.
  • Zest the grapefruit, mixing the zest with a palmful of salt. Really rub the two together to incorporate the essential oils. Roll the rim of two bucket glasses in honey and then dip into the salt mixture.
  • Juice grapefruit until you have one cup of juice. Add grapefruit juice, lime juice and your tea mixture to a shaker. Add ice, shake* and strain evenly into both glasses.
  • Fill to the top with grapefruit seltzer and enjoy.

Notes

*Be sure not to skip the shaking with ice and straining step. It might be tempting to just build your drink in the glass, but doing so results in a drink that is a bit too acidic. Shaking with ice dilutes the mixture to perfect drinkability.
